Teacher stabbed dead in Tondo (PhilStar)
By Nestor Etolle (The Philippine Star) Updated January 14, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (0)
MANILA, Philippines - A high school teacher was stabbed dead in his house in Tondo, Manila Thursday afternoon.
The body of Nelson Macam, 49, who worked at the Ramon Magsaysay High School, was discovered by his younger sister, May, when she checked his room in their three-story residence at past 1 p.m.
May, who occupies a room at the third floor of the house, told police she was supposed to have lunch with her brother but he would not answer her phone calls. When she checked his room, which is on the second floor, she found Macam’s body, clad in boxer shorts.
Police Officer 2 Jupiter Tajonera said the victim sustained stab wounds in the chest, back and both arms. “The victim tried to parry the thrusts from the suspect as indicated from stab wounds in both arms,” he said.
Tajonera said the victim frequently entertained male visitors and gay friends in his room.
Except for bloodstains on floor leading to the bathroom, the living room was in order and a digital video disc was still playing. A cell phone charger was inserted in the wall socket, but the phone is missing, Tajonera said. The victim’s briefs and a bathroom towel were hung on a table near the bathroom.
Tajonera said he is still checking whether Macam lost cash or valuables in the attack.
Residents in the area told police they did not notice anything unusual at the time Macam’s body was discovered.

Edmund Padilla, Gay Filipino Teen, Scalded With Boiling Water By Father Erano (VIDEO)
Posted: 1/5/12 03:43 PM ET
A Filipino teen has become the victim of a horrifying, allegedly homophobia-fueled attack by his own father.
The Philippine LGBT Hate Crime Watch (PLHCW) is now demanding justice for 19-year-old Edmund Padilla, who allegedly suffered severe burns after his father Erano scalded him with boiling water. Erano, who has since been detained and was reportedly drunk at the time of the attack, told authorities he committed the crime after Edmund turned out to be the third of his children who identified as gay.
Reighben Labilles, PLHCW spokesperson, has slammed the attack, according to Queerty:
"We plead to the government to initiate proactive programs that provides parents and LGBT children the opportunities to promote freedom of expression of sexuality and gender. In a free society, the parents should respect the rights of their LGBT and stop altogether corporal punishment. We are born this way and you cannot punish us to change our sexuality.
Since Edmund Padilla is already 19 years old, he may no longer be covered by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and our national child protection laws, yet we fear that so many violent acts perpetrated by parents and legal guardians against their LGBT children go unreported. It is so urgent for Congress to find ways to protect sons and daughters of whatever age from family-based violence and the Convention is a good place to start."

Gov't told: Boost efforts to protect gay rights
MANILA, Philippines - Members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community are seeing signs of hope that their rights will be protected in the country after the United States warned that it will withhold aid from nations which do not recognize gay rights.
LGBT groups on Monday called on the Aquino administration to follow in the footsteps of the US and "take a serious policy position to address the violation of their rights."
"LGBTs in the Philippines are still on the receiving end of stigma, hatred, violence, exclusion, homophobia, transphobia and discrimination. The statement from Secretary Clinton hits close to home as she was speaking of conditions present in our country," Marlon Lacsamana, founder of the Philippine LGBT Hate Crime Watch (PLHCW), said in a statement.
"We hope this will be considered by President Aquino's administration to encourage the full implementation of human rights protection of LGBTs in law, policies and programs," he added.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in a speech at the United Nations in Geneva, committed $3 million to start a global equity fund to support civil society organizations working for LGBT rights worldwide.
"Gay people are born into -- and belong to -- every society in the world. They are all ages, all races, all faiths. They are doctors and teachers, farmers and bankers, soldiers and athletes," Clinton said.
Angie Umbac, president of the legal rights group Rainbow Rights Project, said they "await a similar enthusiasm on the part of the Philippine government in heeding this call."
The Progressive Organization of Gays in the Philippines (ProGay), meanwhile, said it submitted reports to the Human Rights Council to pressure the Aquino government to pass the anti-discrimination bill and introduce other measures in Congress that criminalize hate-related murders of LGBTs.
Progay human rights officer Oscar Atadero said Malacañang has to "start institutionalizing policies that would outlaw workplace discrimination and the bullying of LGBT students."
According to PLHCW, 147 LGBTs have been murdered since 1996, with about 37 of them recorded in 2011 alone.
